'll hear, don, is president obama call for congress in washington, d.c. to do what legislators in colorado have done, which is colorado, the president will say is a frontier state, a state that has a history and respect for gun ownership, but they did take some measures to add restrictions on gun ownership including universal background checks, expanding them and a ban on high sxaft magazine, i believe over 15 rounds. so president obama will say that congress and washington, d.c. should do what colorado has done. of course, they're very different. the legislature in colorado is democratic. where as in washington, d.c. this is obviously the house is republican and there are some questions about whether or not this gun control legislation will be able to get through the senate, because not every democrat is on board and certainly some republicans are not as well. so that's basically his pitch today. >> okay, so that's a political battle here. let's go to the front lines, so to speak. you spent time with agents on the front lines of the nation's battle with gunle hav le havgun. tell us what y

far. according to the "wall street journal," the obama administration has decided to turn down the volume. white house correspondent dan lothian live from washington on that part of the story for us this morning. dan, this report reveals that the administration has a game plan for showing military force, but it also says the white house is now dialing back. why? >> reporter: well, you're right. i mean, the report talks about sort of this playbook, if you will, that has specific steps that was signed off on by the administration. essentially, the u.s. flexing its muscles to try to turn down the temperature, not only in north korea but also in the region there. but this report pointing out that the steps that the u.s. has taken may have been more provocative, may have pushed and provoked this new leader, kim jong-un, more than intended, so they're dialing things back just a bit. keep in mind that the u.s. presence has been increasing in the region in recent weeks starting back on march 8th when the u.s. flew b-52s as part of what was described as a routine mission. then about 2 1

much. we have breaking news right now in washington. john harwood with the details. over to you, john. >> maria, this is part of the sequester battle this is symbolic. you had president obama at the white house confirming he's going to return 5% of his salary since the beginning of the sequester, which hit on march the 1st. now, the president makes $400,000 a year. that's a little more than $30,000 a month, which means that 5% of that for a month, so far, we're just in the beginning of april, is less than $2,000. not a consequential amount of money, but this is part of the president's attempt to get the high ground, especially as some of the sequester effects kick in. i wouldn't be at all surprised, we heard a similar thing from chuck hagel, the defense secretary, because a lot of the defense cuts are coming in defense, earlier today. i wouldn't be surprised if we hear that from some members of congress, with the question of leadership as well. but principally, only for those who like president obama, don't actually need that money, maria. >> john, thanks so much. john, let me ask you
